The 2nd edition of the standards is the current version and is developed by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care. The commission is preparing to develop the National Safety and Quality Health Services (NSQHS) Standards (third edition) with consultation commencing in 2025.
The primary aim of the NSQHS Standards is to protect the public from harm and improve the quality of health services.
There are 8 key standards that form NSQHS, these being: Clinical Governance Standard, Partnering with Consumers Standard, Preventing and Controlling Infection Standard, Medication Safety Standard, Comprehensive Care Standard, Communicating for Safety Standard, Blood Management Standard, and Recognising and Responding to Acute Deterioration Standard.
